VPN-1® Power Multi-core security gateways redefine the tradeoff between security and performance by providing integrated application security at multi-gigabit speeds. Providing the same integrated firewall, VPN, and intrusion prevention found in VPN-1 Power, VPN-1 Power Multi-core builds on the latest multi-core technologies available in servers and appliances to accelerate SmartDefense™ intrusion prevention. This enables the heightening of an organization’s security profile by turning on the needed protections while maintaining the performance levels that business leaders demand.

IT security has traditionally focused on stopping static, network-layer attacks such as spoofing or scanning for open ports. In the past, performance for countering these attacks has been accelerated in a number of ways like using application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) that can perform these well-defined functions at high speeds. Enhanced Security, Enhanced Performance:

To leverage the latest processor technologies, VPN-1 Power Multi-core integrates the CoreXL™ multi-core load balancing technology. This patent-pending technology ensures multi-core systems efficiently process security traffic by leveling out the traffic between cores. The result is a dramatic acceleration of application security performance.

For example, using a generic server with a dual-core processor, VPN-1 Power Multi-core accelerates SmartDefense performance for a strict protection profile (approximately 70 percent of SmartDefense and Web Intelligence settings activated) to 540 Mbps—an improvement of more than 45 percent when compared to the same server without CoreXL. When using a server with two quad-core processors, VPN-1 Power Multi-core accelerates strict protection throughput to more than 1.8 Gbps.

By providing this level of performance, it enables businesses to protect sensitive or exposed data with a much higher security level than they could with ASIC-based solutions. At the same time, VPN-1 Power Multi-core provides a predictable level of performance as new threats emerge. Unlike ASIC-based systems that depend on preprogrammed chips for inspection and acceleration, VPN-1 Power Multi-core is based on powerful general-purpose processors that can quickly be reprogrammed to address dynamic threats. Increased packets per second—with the adoption of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and other low-latency multimedia applications, the number of packets flowing through a network has risen dramatically. VPN-1 Power Multi-core addresses this by increasing the packet inspection rate by as much as 33 percent, enabling multimedia applications to flow freely and securely.
